I'd like to know if any of you have had the opportunity to run your FJR up to its top speed. If you have, what was that speed? Or do you know someone who has done so. I've heard the FJR is capable of speeds north of 150 mph, but I don't know if I would have the nerve, if given the opportunity, to run it up that high.

Just curious.

I've taken mine up over 130 on the *ahem* track and wasn't even close to redlining. I figure 155+ is within the realm of possibility. Not that I'd recommend it anyplace other than on a track with full medical support staff available, and cash in pocket to completely replace the FJR should it go down at those speeds.

I would depend on rider size, windshield (size, adjustment, etc.), load, with(out) bags, elevation, temp, etc.

Practically, anything more than 10 over the speed limit is simply handing cash over to the state.

With bags on, on a closed course, cool weather, I had the bike reach an impasse with the atmosphere at approximately 153mph. That's with a corrected speedo, so an uncorrected speedo might have indicated 160ish. That's tucking in and holding it wide open. The bike doesn't act up or anything... just burns lots of fuel while held wide f'in open at that speed.

The fastest I've had mine, bags on & CeeBailey +2+2 windshield all the way up, was 145 indicated, 137 gps. It was still climbing slowly but I was rapidly running out of runway.

With no bags, windscreen down, tucked in like on a crotch rocket, hot day on a desert road. 135mph was good enough as my sphincter was getting real tight !

154 on GPS was the limit.
It still had about 500-700 rpms, but just wouldn't gain any more mph.

LS: As a guy who at times made his living doing wind-tunnel testing I would have loved to have had you make another run with the bags off to quantify the speed difference.

To follow up on your comment about fuel flow I would be fascinated to see what a gen III instantaneous mileage readout indicates at those speeds. The power required, and thus fuel flow, is more or less proportional to the cube of the speed. Thus compared to cruising at 60 mph, the power required at 153 mph is twenty times greater. If fuel consumption at 60 mph is about 50 mpg, at 153 it's probably around 2.5 (!) mpg.

On an empty "track" in Wyoming in June, no bags, 200+ lb fully geared rider, Yamaha Touring Windscreen about halfway up, I hit 154 on speedo which was 150 on gps, and that is all she could give.

Thanks for the additional data point. My nerdy self finds it interesting that you achieved about the same top end in Wyoming as others did at lower altitudes. The altitude and reduced air density cuts both ways; on the one hand the engine develops less power there, but the drag is also reduced in the less dense air. They seem to about cancel each other out but but with the side effect that developing less power translates to less fuel flow required. My back of the envelope calculation says that if, at sea level, this condition gave 2.5 mpg, you might have been getting about 3.3 mpg there.

I can't speak to my FJR, as anything over 100 it begins to wobble a bit. Yeah, gotta get that checked. Plus, I haven't had a ticket since 1986 (seriously) and don't want to break my streak.

However, on Birmingham's I-459 on a brilliant summer day in 1989, I got my '86 FJ1200 up to an "indicated" 155mph. That was good enough for me. No desire to do it again.

I have, however, been working on small power wheelies on the FJR. :wink2:

I43 near Mukwonago, WI got my 84 FJ1100 up to 145 indicated and the sound of the wind on my helmet was deafening... Fun though...

Had mine up to 140 on the interstate, then figured I'm in the middle of nowhere if I get stopped and this bike gets impounded then it's a long walk home, so I slowed to 75 and set the cruise control. Bags on, windshield down, not completely tucked but leaning forward 200+ rider. Still had a few K left on the tach.

Just once, and only for a few seconds, had my 84 FJ (1314cc Wiseco bore kit) up to 250km/h indicated. Haven't had the FJR much over 200 0:) but I'm sure there will eventually be that one time >:)

I haven't gone above 90mph honestly, and I had to go that fast just to keep up with traffic. If I ever really try to go fast, I'll do it at the strip or the track, not on the highways, which are horrible in NJ.

Helmet buffeting at those speeds is spooky scary :surprise:

I've seen 161 indicated, actual speed I don't know. I was tucked in and bike was very stable! I'm not sure who would try to do a top speed run without getting "in the bubble" the wind at these speed will try and rip you off the bike, like your body and head are a sail! Motorbikes are about as aerodynamic as the side of a barn, why add to it with your head and body?
